I think this stems from his relationship with his parents. His childhood didn't allow for a safe space to feel or understand his emotions. So now when he feels something strongly he doesn't know how to process or what's the best way to react. I would say internalized homophobia but I don't even think he knows what he's feeling is love. He just knows what doesn't sit right with him. Also, we literally see how the "gay" people in the industry have treated him so no wonder he only has a negative perception of them.
