If I understood well, the step mother told the garde that he could go rest for the day or something like that. So when her dad ring the bell there was no one in front of his door. But we don't know if he rang because he was ill or just being murdered.

You may found it strange but I kinda want her to die. Like I love the character and the story but I really want the others to realize what they have lost and what they have done.
I think I want them to pay for it, she die and then they realize it is there fault but they can't do anything about it. And they end up living in guilt
It is a bit messy in my head, but I think it will fit more withe the story if it doesn't end with a happy ending.
I'll be sad for sure but I will understand.
