Human mind is complicated, which is what the author has been saying over and over. Mc is feeling like human, he has a complicated mind, which means that even though he decided to drive humanity to extinction in the beginning doesn't mean he has to do it. 
Honestly, I really like his character. His actions must not be justified in the slightest, but at least he abandoned the idea and found his reason to live.
