Non Zero Sum - Ch. 73

Here is some spoiler ‼️

The novel plays out in a way where the protagonist doesn’t get revenge in the conventional sense. He does attempt suicide, and when everyone thinks he’s dead, the MLs all spiral. Haeyoung starts losing his mind, self-harming, and hallucinating Haewon, though he refuses to believe he’s actually dead (he isn’t). Taegyeom is drowning in guilt, and before he finds out Haewon is alive (which happens way later, after Haewon and Haeyoung get together), he’s plagued by constant nightmares of the moment Haewon jumped off that cliff. Hyunwoo hears the news while he’s abroad and reacts pretty much the same way as Taegyeom, minus the nightmares. Honestly, this is the closest thing to “revenge” Haewon gets—making the MLs actually suffer.

This novel has a habit of making things seem like they’re getting better before everything escalates like crazy—mostly because of Haeyoung. Near the end, when Haeyoung finds Haewon alive and convinces him to stay, they fall into a relationship that’s technically better, but Haewon still has to tiptoe around Haeyoung’s moods to avoid setting him off. Still, it’s miles ahead of how things were before, and Haeyoung does stop hitting him. But in the side stories, there are still moments where Haeyoung gets violent out of jealousy and suspicion. That said, by the end of side story 2, the author hints that things will finally settle down.

The “chasing arc” for the MLs happens when Haewon runs off and lives in another town for Taegyeom (Haeyoung, at this point, doesn’t chase him—just waits for Haewon to come to him on his own).

For Haeyoung, the chasing arc happens when he tracks Haewon down in some small village after his suicide attempt. There, he gets on his knees, begs, and pleads for forgiveness, saying he never meant to ruin their relationship and that he was just jealous when he pulled all that awful s*t. In the end, things somehow work out, but Haeyoung doesn’t actually "regret" what he did. Instead, he just wishes he’d done it sooner—without dragging the others into it. The whole novel makes it clear: Haeyoung is a f**g psychopath.
