...Ah yes, but there is far more cruel fates than death (if you are curious enough look for a film called "Johnny got his gun")...
MC knows that, he knows that he saved them and they pay with betrayal, if they only let them live and not helping them, they all will suffer and be regretfull.
Kill and the pain is gone. Let them live with the guilt and having to deal with their problems without help and the pain is longer (again, the brunete is a prove of concept, being all regretfull after learning the truth, other is the white hair one having to deal with her disease and suffer a lot more now that the MC is not there to absorb the disease ).
Also, just killing them in his current level can be a lot troublesome (like dealing with the consequences of killing his master), so just let them deal alone with their problems is not a bad revenge...
man, I'd agree with you if this was a modern society story, but it is murim, and there war far more worse reasons to kill or betray people in murim...
but back to this one, my argument is, that because they felt they were forced to be with him in their previous life, they didn't felt love for him, in fact some even hate him, felling that he was the reason of some misfortune in their life.
Like the brunette, who, in the previous life, lost the chance to be with her family because he was delaying her encouter by training her. (as far as I understand, she even had doubts if he was responsible of their deaths), of course she didn't knew the true that her family was using her and never love her and without knowing that, she betray the MC. Is she wrong on seeking revenge ? by murim standards, no.
And she is the first one who latter discovers that his intentions of delaying her was to protect her and is showing deep remorse. She is at fault? yes. The MC is also at fault? yes, for knowing the situation and now explaining properly, thinking was better for her now knowing how awfull her family was.
And I suspect that there is more to it, that someone was feeding their hate towards the MC hoping for the betrayal. that, yeah they may feel some resentiment toward him, but to make them act, someone was inciting them.
The following is an example, not a real scenario...
it was a weird relation, because of the neckace, he always saw his little brother as his protector, so he had a attachment for the brother he tought had died.
And frankly, he had blame, but his father had more, he was the one who free the curse, if he had not done that, the village may have resisted, the older brother try to propose making a deal, but the leader was too arrogant thinking they can defeat the empire that way. (thay can only buy time until another army with a powerfull mage arrive)
one thing tho, its really really strange he didn't ha...
