When people freak out, it doesn't matter if it's a real fire or an illusion. If she hadn't stepped in and saved her, she could have been trampled to death, and if she hadn't stopped it, more than one person would have been trampled on or seriously hurt. It just takes one slip or someone pushing you out of the way causing you to fall, and the stampete will just step all over you. It's common knowledge, remember what happened to Mufasa in The Lion King, it wasn't the fall that killed him.
