I 100% think makotos conversation with D was planed to leave him unable to say makotos bame since the start. First he brings uo the concept of the system, asking D why he just doesn't say his name which not only gives him a bit of a whiplash from the sudden topic change bur he follows it up by saying HIS name which shocks him to his core. Then D responds by saying makotos name thinking they are on a 50/50 level when it reality makoto probably overpassed D a while ago but didnt know because at some point D just defulted to saying "you" when referring to makoto. Makoto then gets D's gaurd down by playingit off as just a innocent silly test to see how far hes gotten. Lastly, makoto uses the skills hes learned from the demon world by overwhelming D with talk of overthrowing J, the most powerful demon and the man who is in constant proximity with D. Makoto knows that to win you must make others unnerved by you, and by using D's fear and slight admiration for J he wins. Still makoto once again had to rely on the man he hates to gain power.

J wants him to throw away his humanity to climb to the top with him, is this because he's lonely? Maybe hes bored, perhaps he doesn't truly believe makoto has such strength to do ao and is just toying with him. THIS is why I love the idea of words and deceiving people having power because it can even fool the reader!! Nobody truly knows how J feels about ANYTHING because maybe not even J knows what he even wants at this point. Ive seen a lotta theories in the fandom that J wants someone stronger than him so he can finally let his gaurd down and "die". However nobody knows because hes such a deceptive demon gosh I love this story

I LOOOOOOOOVE the concept of words having more power than anything. I remember when I first read this i was absolutely floored because thats such an interesting power system?? Not only do you have to be smart to make it, you also have to be able to string along a sentence well enough to AURGHH ITS ALL JUST SO COO

Dude not only does he have an obviously major inferiority complex, hes being one up by a child! Imagine that dude?? You train MMA your whole life because you wanna be seen as cool and the best at it. You put all of this energy and devotion into it and outta nowhere BAM a freshly 15 year old brat comes outta nowhere and not only passes you but ALSO moves the bar for what the strongest could be. Fu** being able to beat someone outta your weight class, this kid just went toe to toe with a hump back whale and WON! Thats how crazy this is from an average person’s perspective.

I loooove how much this story uses the idea of feeling less then someone. In most shonen theres usually one character who gives it their all to get stronger, only to be surpassed by the new and shiny mc who seems born with their strength that they’ve been working towards their life. But thats the issue, its usually ONE character who feels that way! I like how not only has zanka struggled with the issue of being normal but follo does as well. Furthermore! I love how zanka uses that to push himself to get stronger internally, while follo is lashing out in small ways and taking it out on rudo externally. Real two sides of the same coin
