That pink hair girl was actually the real daughter but she was possessed by someone and that someone has a power to control mind. The clue here is that Penelope accidentally noticed that pink haired girl was so cold as is she's a corpse. And as you can see Reynolds behavior suddenly changed at the last panel of this chapter realizing that he said something rude to Penelope that he isn't supposed to say. (well this is all the things I remembered after reading the novel long² ago so I'm not sure if it's accurate)
