I doubted it ever since it was shown the empress could use magic. She threw a spell on the emperor making him a brainless puppet and threw Leah mother's out. Then convince him that her son was his by using a spell that turn his hair white. Now, the obsession he has for Leah make valid sense, they are not real siblings.

In a sense, I understand why she is so close off with him (Removing the age gap) Her first husband sacrificed his future for her, and he made her regret it Every. Single. Day. She doesn't want to repeat the same mistake, making a young boy with a bright future abandon his dreams to be with her. Yes, he is rich, but she doesn't know, second, who shall accept it? His family will definitely not agree in him marrying a poor woman with no background, no surprise he is hiding his relationship. So pitiful and funny at the same time, instead of being a man, going to find his wife who could have been abducted by debt collectors, the idiot went to jump in the arms of his mistress instead. Even the slightest bit of dignity, left his body. He didn't even think about calling the police.

I partly doubted it, there is no way a girl will stay 13 years with a dumbass if he wasn't at least nice in the beginning. There were hints throughout the story that he wasn't always like that. She stayed loyal because she craved what they once have. But what is dead is dead and sticking to something harmful just destroys you in the long run.
