@zuul81 If I remember correctly, it was only for prostitution; nobles and commoners did not use it, as it was frowned upon. In Western Europe, the influence of the Church made it believed that preventing a child from being born was against G**'s will, and people were reluctant to inject anything into their bodies. That's why some doctors, through great persuasion, provided it to prostitutes to combat STIs.
