I think he was referring to the Japanese invasion of the region Manchuria in China in 1931-32. Since this arc is set in the early 1900s, its historically accurate and when he refrenced "[lining] up their own pockets" its probably referring to the fact that Manchuria was a land rich in natural resources thus it was crucial to Japan's economy and its restabilisation following the after effects of the GD (Great Depression). But yeah idk ill have to continue reading and im a little stumped as to how it links to SKorea so if anyone understands, please explain it to me
