I have to say it again:
"I f**g hate people who leave a bare star rating and call it a review."
You clicked one star. Or five. That's it. Zero words. And somehow that carries the exact same weight on this site's average score as someone who actually sat down, read the whole thing, and explained why the pacing fell apart in act two or why the romance subplot dragged the whole story down. It doesn't carry the same weight. It shouldn't. But the way these scores get averaged, it does, and that's the actual problem.
A blank 1-star tells me nothing. Did you hate the writing? The art? Did you drop it three chapters in because you weren't the target audience for a slow-burn psychological thriller and rated it like it owed you a fast-paced action romp? I genuinely don't know, because you typed zero words before clicking the button. And a blank 5-star is just as useless in the other direction, congrats, you liked it, cool, why though? What worked? What am I supposed to take from that besides "this person had a positive feeling one time"?
Rating without reasoning isn't criticism. It's a mood swing with a UI attached to it. You're not engaging with the work, you're just broadcasting that you felt a feeling and expecting that feeling to count the same as someone who put in actual thought. It doesn't. A rating with zero text should count for less than an actual breakdown, full stop, and the fact that the current system treats them identically is exactly why perfectly good titles end up sitting at some hollow 2.3 that nobody can actually explain if you ask them why.
I get that not everyone wants to write paragraphs. Fine, genuinely fine, I know I'm the outlier who can't stop writing essays about manhwa I finished at 2am. You don't need to match that. You need ONE LINE. A punchline. Something. "Clickbait, felt like a Temu knockoff of better titles" tells me infinitely more in six words than half the reviews I scroll past that are just a star and dead silence. Even "great fights, story's kinda mid" is doing actual work. Silence does nothing.
The entire point of a review section existing is so the next person can make an informed call before they sink twenty chapters into something. A blank star does the opposite of that. It's actively worse than not rating at all, because it pads the number without giving anyone a single reason to trust it. If you don't have anything to say, don't rate it. Or at minimum, give me one sentence so I know WHY you felt that way instead of just THAT you felt it.
I wish the site let us actually see whose bare-star ratings are dragging a title's score down and mass-downvote their a*s into irrelevance. If your "review" is a wordless star and nothing else, you shouldn't get to sit there anonymously tanking someone's average with zero accountability. At least make the empty ones visible so the rest of us can bury them the way they deserve.
Say something. Anything. A punchline counts. A complaint counts. Praise with an actual reason counts. Just stop leaving a trail of silent stars behind you like you're too good to explain yourself, because you're not, you're just lazy, and it's dragging good stories down for absolutely no reason anyone can point to.
