Dom and sub are a separate thing from maso***** and sad***. It's just that stories are mostly written with characters as sadistic doms and masochistic subs, so then people write more stories like that bc it's all they know. Irl, dominant masochists are totally a thing, where they want to tell people how to hurt them and praise them for doing it well. Submissive sadists want to be told how to torment somebody, or get praised for doing it well. You can also be sadomasochistic, where you enjoy both giving and receiving pain, and those can also be dominant of submissive. Basically, everyone's different!
People just almost never write stories about these kinds of people, because they don't map 1:1 with sexist ideas about how men and women should act around each other, which then got carried over into BL and gay media.
