I kinda understand Follo’s reaction; after all, he’s only human.
But there’s something important that people forget :
You become a Giver because you’re obsessed with an object that holds a special place in your heart, because it has played an important role in your life. And it’s this intense obsession with the object that determines whether or not you become a Giver.
Enjin explained it at the start of the manga: only a very small proportion of the population can wield a Jinki (a Vital Object). It’s not just because you want to become a Giver that you actually do...
And I think that’s the problem with Follo; he’s thinking about it the wrong way round.
For him, it’s: I want to protect people --> I must become a Giver --> I need to obtain a Jinki --> so I look after an object (whether it’s dear to me or not)
Whereas for most Givers, it’s more like: A traumatic event in my life happens --> I keep an object connected to it to remember it (or for some other reason) --> it never leaves my side, so I look after it --> I become a Giver --> I use my Giver power to...
So fundamentally, he’s unlikely to become one. And the worst thing is that even with the classic progression, there’s no guarantee of becoming a Giver...
So, seeing him struggle like that makes me feel a bit sorry for him. Sometimes in life, you just have to accept that you can’t do what others do, and choose your own weapons. Perhaps one day he’ll become a Giver, but for now, he should be content with his position and carry on doing what he can...
