The point is a not so good man pushed by rumors to become a villain and it was not the fault of the system but people ready to pile on someone.

He just have weak heart in result so many innoncent people die .Kill the one who talk bad seem more fair than what he doing right now. Or even better start new life with new name

He could not make a living as an adventurer... This is like getting fired because of rumors. Sure he was not a good person, more of a jerk, but pushing a jerk to become a criminal is the whole point of the story.
Someone being a jerk but not jerk enough to be fired and then being fired for rumors with him ending a criminal
is what happened to make it simple
It was not a system that failed, it was the small weakness of humans to belive in rumors rather than to seek fact. A small weakness that created a chain reaction that killed people. Sure it was his choice but hardly an unavoidable situation.

@Daimaou To be fair she does clarify that he was a heinous criminal. I'm sure she's referring to his actions here. She's just admitting some guilt over the fact that the Guild was too lenient in regards to how they just tried to sweep it under the rug instead of taking any sort of action regarding the false accusations against him.
