I think ML wanted to show what MC agrees to in this case (worst case scenario) to check the sincerity of his confession, to make sure that it was not a momentary impulse. Although I will not say that he did the right thing, but considering that his feelings have been going on for a very long time, I understand his bias. Because for him this is serious, not a short fling
