I think it's because with older women even if we aren't that old we are alot more sensitive to our age sometimes and I feel she is not only insecure about her age but in disbelief that someone young and handsome would want her. Especially since she's been what you call " discarded for a younger woman". Either way I am glad she finally told him that she is accepting him. It's about time.
