Personally, if I were the main protagonist, I'd have cut off the joints in mao's limbs so he couldn't move or somehow trapped him instead of killing...Then I'd use that monster map to hunt down all the remaining dark blue dragons, eat their cores and only then would I kill mao...Since killing mao apparently destroys the calendar and summons this beast, i'd not only have reduced all dragon threats before it arrived, I'd have also gotten stronger from consuming their cores even if it's only a little

@Black Shen It's never too late to drop your opinions...I understand your comment and was already aware of this fact...I was just saying, if I were in his shoes, I'd do things differently...Ofcourse anyone actually in his body would drop dead instantly, with all what he was enduring...Just saying.
