I get what you're saying and generally agree. There are a lot of MCs out there that get crapped on by "friends", guild, or country. However, I don't see that happening here.
The MC is accepting payment he finds to be best, naivety or not. 100 gold coins would change his family's life and allow him to retire, but money can be stolen. . . levels can't.
He was given the opportunity to potentially triple his level overnight. With that kind of increase in ability and "power" comes the security of being capable enough to provide for his family on a regular basis, instead of being blessed by luck.
Were it me, I'd have asked for a split payment. Accept something like 25 gold coins (25,000 rye breads) and 4 of the 5 leveling stones. That's food and necessities for nearly a year, and a potential increase in level to dependably be able to provide.
