@Whatever if we didn't learn that magic was involved, I'd completely agree with you. But since magic has been keeping the prince disguised or otherwise invisible for the past 7 years, I feel a (VERY SMALL) crumb of sympathy for him here.
The emperor is likely breathing down the duke's neck to get him to find the missing prince and no one can disobey a direct order from the emperor due to consequences that can include death. Even if he's able to use his power as a Duke to avoid the worst of it, Cassia signing the divorce papers removes any power/protection that she had as his family member. So that, coupled with the fact that she obviously snuck out during the guard shift change, while being under suspicion of hiding the prince and therefore disobeying a direct order from the emperor... Yeah I think his crash out here is valid.
But!!! Like I said, my sympathy is a very small crumb. He still let their relationship sour to the point that she no longer thought they were even close enough for an in person goodbye. If he was going to care for her safety like this, he should have done it when his a*s and her life weren't on the line with the emperor 🙄.
