@J.shapland but Riftan at this stage of the novel does not know anything about her father violent behaviour. He thinks his job is to protect her from hardship. He really cares for Maxi well beeing. He saw so much wars, death, sadness which he wants her not to know anything about it. One part of the problem is the lack of communication and understanding but know that it is just temporary.

@Babytingz YES! I haven't read the novel, but that scene when she rides off in the carriage and he just stares at her leaving... he had to know she would eventually find out and gave her no encouragement
