Correct me if I'm wrong: I believe it was not his imagination, since he was shown traveling back to the past after "waking up from his dream". He simply just found a spot that would let him travel back and forth in time. Since I'm rereading, and haven't been able to read the newest 5 chapters, I can't say for sure though, since something might've changed.
