It's like he gave him a chance to "deny that he kissed him intentionally and act as if nothing happened'' yang could have answered something like"oh... I see" and go with Zhen's excuse even if he knew it was intentional but he didn't
(So that's just how I understood it given the situation so it's only my understanding)

Ummm so i just checked and yes it's how i explained it 
"To provide someone with an excuse or a means of escaping (from something)."
