I think he is mixed half human half demon or a lilttle more human...but eithers worka

western king adopted him. and because he knew of plotarmor he didnt try to kill him but tried to raise dariel into a advisor for his son.
son despised dariel for hogging all his fathers attention and love when the father only invested so much into dariel because it would help his own child.
you can read "knew of plot armor" as "thought that all life starts innocent", but that wouldnt have been a good fit for the dark mood i wanted.
@meepmeep Have to wonder if the western king knew of a story similar to Tim Pratt's "Another End of the Empire." Tyrant gets a prophecy that a boy from a village will grow up to kill him, but when advised to promptly destroy the village, the tyrant's all "Yeah, and then he'll escape and come for head in 20 years! Are you nuts!?"
Although he doesn't then go and kidnap anyone. His plan's more complicated then that.
