That room... I think I'm starting to understand the story.
My theory goes like this:
Swallow is a being that is created in order to guard something g** wants to be kept secret. Something the world cannot see, and is connected to "heroes".
150 years ago, there was a great hero, we read about him.
He killed melje's father too, and then challenged swallow's primordial core.
In a turn of events, he saw that piece left by g**, tue one swallow was protecting. He decided he must guard it from the world... Or guard the world from it.
And so, since humans don't have infinite lifespan, he decided to turn himself into an undead. An umdead named... You guessed it, Patrick.
Point is, swallow is the gatekeeper to something big, big enough to make a hero turn to his side and help him keepsake it from the world. We also know that sandworm found out about that thing, or a different thing of the same type, maybe a lesser version.
I do not know what said "thing" is, but I can theory more.
1: a piece of g** himself. G** left swallow a piece of himself to protect, for one reason or another.
2: a mirror/window to something horrifying, that mortal minds cannot comprehend.
3: It's just something a human swallow liked a while ago liked or something like that which is highly unlikely in this case.
4: sealed g**. Again, I feel like it's connected to g** somehow.
5: something that makes heroes.. "heroes", or a clue/vision of it/to it. But more like something unholy rather than divine.
This is just a bunch of theories, I've not read the novel and didn't get spoiled yet.
