I'm starting to think we're dealing with the results of 3 timelines here. I think he loved her and turned back time in the original timeline to save her, but then she got possessed anyway in the 2nd timeline and he ended up dying, and then she turned back time this time so it's now the 3rd timeline. It explains why he's so desperate cuz that'd mean he remembers all of it
