You can't really blame the people for their act even though it's false news , anyone would react the same way if they didn't know the truth . The one we should blame is the boy for spreading the rumor

exactly, these people doesn't know the truth, they act based on assumptions and let their emotions prevail, so it is so unfair to the boy to get treated like that when he didn't do anything at all. As a resident of that hometown, Isn't it their responsibility to seek the truth before they act?
