Honestly I think people are too hard on the father with the context that readers have and what was portrayed. Jaina's feelings are justified and also I'm pretty sure she has a harder time forgiving him due to the previous Jaina dying from his inactivity and ignoring her completely. So for Jaina it's also like she herself died since technically she did die in a different timeline.
That being said, no one even mentions really that all of this happened due to the mother. What was portrayed was the father getting stabbed by the mother and her looking disgusted. After that he was heartbroken and went about sealing his emotions. I forgot if it was stated why she did what she did or something like seeing the future idk.
Let's be honest, if you got betrayed would you really go about believe this child is yours and his emotions are sealed so felt nothing on seeing her either (but a little bit of anger). What I'm personally upset about with him was that he just didn't take a DNA test when everyone, I mean just about everyone, was saying to just do the test but he kept saying no.
He's not that bad. He hasn't even tried to justify his actions or make excuses since he knows, no matter how he felt, the way he ignored Jaina was wrong. At least he did protect her while his emotions were sealed. While having someone spy on her, he eventually just turned that spy into a guard. It's fine to hate him, but I think there's too much hate when there's way worse fathers. (And can someone remind me why the mother did what she did if it was explained)
