I bet his father isn't bad. It's just that he's a knight, a slave for the nobles. I think what his mother meant about "don't be like your father" was don't be a knight and become a noble's slave. I could be wrong tho. Maybe his father is a noble too a good one at that then his clan targeted his family having different ideals.
