No matter how many times I reread this, I’m still stunned by the depth of his selfishness. How could he ever envy his own wife, someone who never stood against him, who loved him sincerely and accepted him with her whole heart? All he ever seemed to care about was his reputation, intimidated by the fact that her wealth and status surpassed his. If I were blessed with a partner like her, I would cherish her to death honor her, I would even kiss the ground she walk on and even go to war just FOR HER without hesitation. Yet he couldn’t even offer her the basic affection and respect she so clearly deserved.
