Yeah, he was a good guy for that. Makes everything he did afterwards unjustifiable. No matter what happened before it doesn't excuse the fact that he became an abusive ass**** who only cares about the family name and how to restore glory to his house. That's what it looks to me.
Especially since we haven't seen any evidence that him being like that was of any help in restoring glory. If anything they're being ostracized even more. Note how everything changed when Reese managed to put Claude on the right track. If Reese wasn't there, we see in the intro what Claude grows up to be, like his father, no seat at the round table, and then dead.
