Ok so the 1st Lu Tao came out and make love with cheng jin ( ehm making baby ?) he was confused and not aware that their relationship getting better. The next morning the 2nd lu tao came out thats why he wasnt aware whats going on between cheng jin and the 1st lutao. 
Btw the plot between the 1st or 2nd lu tao and cheng jin actually quite adorable, the most angst in the novel probably the story about cheng jin's brother ?
