This ain't about her family tho, this is about him locking her up, branding her with a hot iron and laughing at her together with everyone else in the court when they all saw how insane she became because of it. It's literally the first scene. Even if he did kill her family for sh!t reason like her neglect, who tf would let their subordinates laugh at the person he supposedly loves?

I suspect it's more than him just liking her. Maybe something like the former empress looked like FL and he has some mommy issues which resulted in her doing to her the same that the former empress went through because he gets off seeing FL in a similar situation to her but idk.
