I think that's actually the case, because the ambush with the assassins were sent by the emperor, and the emperor is making sure no trace of the imperial family is revealed.

@justonemorechapter.cpp I'm getting the feeling that Ceres is somebody important and maybe that's why he was probably separated from his family and his memories erased. Maybe he's also in line to the throne and was thus being eliminated from the race
