The translation when Karlyle says, "Because Mr. Jones... don't think you have that relationship with him" is very poor translation. The proper translation should say, "Because I don't think WE have that kind of relationship". Referring to himself, not to Nicholas (Kyle's husband). Karlyle was worried that because his relationship with Ash is strictly via contract and business, he did not believe he is obligated to forward a personal message to their mutual acquaintance. If Ash wanted to congratulate Nicholas, then he should do so by himself since they are friends. This is Karlyle's perspective.

He also commented that when the contractual relationship ends, then how would he define his relationship with Ash afterwards? Because it is unknown, he couldn't put his finger on whether he should do something personal or remain professional (business as usual). His heart, obviously, says different, but under the facade of nobility and whatnot, he is pressured by society to conform to its expectations regardless if anyone is there to witness his deviations.
