@Melimelo If you really think about it. It's not out of the realm of plausibility.
A) A Duke made between £1,620,512.85 (£1,500 in 1500 AD) to over £54,017,094.97 (over £50,000 in 1500 AD) ) annually in passive income. (Compared to a Marquess who only pulled 1,000 - 5,000 (in 1500 AD)).
B) Political power. Both land, wealth, armies, and influence. A Duke far outstrips a Marquess. To the point Dukedoms were essentially mini-nations under their reign, and they held enough power to bully the monarchy to getting laws favorable to them passed.
Where as a Marquess if they got to powerful or fell out of favor could (and did) get trumped up charges placed on them resulting in the eradication of their entire bloodline.
C) Land ownership difference. Noted above. But the territory ruled between the two is vastly different.
