You are right about the marthin luther thing, BUT black people do NOT need representation. At the end of the day it wasn't neccesary, and yet they did it.
All black people need is the same treatment as any other person, which is in fact what is happening in most countrys btw. They do NOT need to be forced in characters who are originally white or asian.
And when this happens in reversed roles when we are talking about a black character turning white, then you would be mad too EVEN IF its a bg character. No one would ever let it slide.
@DaCup while I do agree that in certain scenarios black representation is not necessary like let's say a romance novel set in Japan. The random appearance of a black character will not be necessary in that case but if we're talking about record of ragnarok, a show/manga that's supposed to represent humanity as a whole where we've seen multiple races and ethnicities to skip an ENTIRE race and shrug it off is very weird. Plus the character we are arguing about MIGHT NOT EVEN BE BLACK. animes and mangas love to do this thing we're they'd introduce a character with dark features and they just end up being gyaru or naturally darker skinned. Plus we don't know who that background characters is based off. Our only information is that he's from shinsengumi. We don't know who he's based off or referencing and the closest possibly reference if the character is even black is Yasuke. And let's stop treating record of ragnarok like it's an accurate depiction of history.
Plus saying 'all black people need is the same treatment as any other person' would have to mean that black people are acknowledged like every one else rather than ignored. Because if black people were treated just the same as every other person, There'd be more shows with black characters and in turn more black representation. The argument for black representation wouldn't be a thing if black rep was more common just like how Asians want proper and accurate representation in western shows.
