I also have the impression that author could have taken the same historical period, the same main characters, the same "start" events from MC's life, but NEVER mentioned slavery or slaves, NEVER showed people in slavery, NEVER even mentioned the word "slavery," and the story would have been perceived as more acceptable and wouldn't have faced much criticism.(Personally, don't really like this decision (but it seems acceptable for the release of such a story, especially since it is a commercial entertainment project))
Perhaps the author meant well in the sense that if you write about this time, you can't keep silent about such important events and people. But here, as in the saying: "We meant well, but it turned out as usual."
Hope the author comes up with another interesting story and releases it. (I'm not sure they'll be able to reboot this particular story.)
