@Sam the barrier will collect refined (used) energy scattered in the air. The easiest way to collect refined energy is from people fighting vs processing natural energy themselves.

Time constraints and all that.

@Sam I think he used some "true Qi" witch usually means that he used life force in most storys, in this one it appears that it just puts a hard cap on the amount of power you can gather/use and there's a way of building it back up. See the array. But I'm guessing that the method is not common to say the least so it was probably seen as a lost cause.
