@DW047 to me it seems like he's suppressing any sorts of romantic or potentially romantic feelings as they're hindering his cultivation style, so the way he's treating ning'er isn't romance. he's acting like a doting older brother and she's willingly playing the role of little sister but she still seems to harbour a crush.

We are demon cultivators, our methods of achieving success i always over pools of blood and mountains of corpses we get what we want regardless of anything else because if we die we die only but emotions hold us back if we have someone we care about, we would be dragged down not because we are weak but rather because we at that moment won't be saving only ourselves but also them meaning that the enemies can attack them and we will be helpless
