@Karrisha Bright Originally, he isn't. It's based on a musical called Phantom of the Opera, where Erik (same name in musical as in this book, same with Chris(tine)) is deformed due to his mother drinking poison upon discovering she is pregnant with an illegitimate child, whic caused him to deform
