@Iessica Is he though? Can you really say you are someone when your personality, memories and almost everything about yourself except your appearance not the same as that person? Is being someone's reincarnation really the same as being that person? So It makes complete sense for him to think that he's a "shell" and to question Jack's affection towards him.

He might have the same soul and the same appearance, but your memories and experiences make a huge part of who you are as a person, if even a patient who wakes up from memory loss, as you said, could feel like a different person, imagine when it's literally a different life
