I went back to look and he was literally crying to Wataru how he was still madly in love with his ex. So I really don't understand where this "half assed answer" was that he ex talked about.

@Claire its in chap 5 .in confessing scene . when uke ask seme if he still love his ex and the reply from seme was " Im not is what i did like to claim, but i dont think i can. I am sorry. but i really wanted to be your boyfriend"
