First lesson in riding horse is "taming", horses are mostly picky to whom they allow to ride them. If you ride an untamed horse then the possiblity of failing the basic riding lesson is so d*mn high since you have to find the suitable horse for you (which fits your personality).

(Agreeing) There's a chance that some of them will land in jobs where the time will come where they can't be picky about which horse they'll ride -they'll have to take what's available. Unlike a bleeding cowboy movie, you can't just jump on the nearest horse and take off -they're crankier than that. (My dad also called horses two-year-olds that haven't been potty trained when explaining their temperaments.)
My younger kid is the type who can make friends with any horse in about ten minutes (it's really amazing to watch), but most people can't do that.
