Hey guys, did you know before the popularity of tomato-based ketchup, mushroom-based ones were referred to as "ketchup"? Even before that, the word ketchup originated from kê-tsiap, which was a fermented fish sauce, not a tomato!

What's funny is that tomatoes, mushrooms, and fish sauce have a similar component found within each other, which is umami. Umami is the delicious, savory taste triggered by glutamates, which is the key component in MSG!
@Jay Feibe Yep! Basically started with fish sauce in the east, and some westerner came over and was like Ooh I like this, then they tried to recreate that at home. Then some easterner came and had what the western guy made, and loved it, and tried to recreate it at home. Back and forth until you got modern fruit based ketchups... including the most common, tomato. I am forever amused by this. People just be trying to recreate things they had elsewhere all the time.
