Because in these stories, the protagonist has to let her father, stepmother, stepsister, and ex-fiancé mistreat her because her idiot mother brainwashed her into thinking it's necessary to maintain the family's dignity. These rules of nobility only apply to the protagonist.

The stepsister can act like a bi*** in public, and the other characters treat her like a saint.
