In the past when he saw Shuri who came to worship with her husband as newlyweds, he falls in love at first sight and tries to forget her by abusing himself because his body is obsessed with desire. Though he is obsessed with Shuri, he doesn't believe that her feelings of cherishing Jeremy will be her mother's feelings because he thinks she can't be pure, and when the prince courts her, the priest doesn't like it, but self-rationalizes that he can't see the prince being fooled by the devil. When the first trial happened and Shuri proved her chastity and rescued Jeremy, Richeliu lamented that she was a devil in the disguise of the Virgin and pledged to either have Shuri completely or get rid of her. Richeliu was thirsty + jealous, period. “Be mine or you will burn!” —there’s a scene later on after the 2nd trial where he even visited her at her manor and try to convince her to become his subordinates as he is only trying to guide her at the right path. He even KIDNAPPED shuri and threatened her by saying that the church is planning to burn her alive to set an example, and that she can only be saved if she gives herself to him, he told her that he can save her only when she "cut all her ties with the everything and give her soul and body to him".
Also, in the 2nd trial before Shuri was defended, Richeliu planned to take Shuri away to monastery
