Roger the butler
Spoiler!
There was a child named Edgar. He was known to be the most beautiful child, and everyone loved him. But he was born with a weak body.

Edgar came from the Otis family. The Otis family was once powerful and wealthy. However, by the time his parents were born, the family was no longer as influential or rich.

Edgar had an older brother named Neil. Neil hated Edgar the most. He blamed him for all his misfortunes.

When Edgar’s parents died, Neil inherited what was left of their family’s wealth. Unfortunately, he wasn’t good at managing money, so they soon went bankrupt and were kicked out of their house. Neil then decided to stay with a distant relative, Sylvestien.

The madam of the house was childless. She disliked Neil but loved Edgar. One day, she told Edgar that she wanted to make him her heir, but in return, he would have to cut ties with his brother. Edgar, who had been groomed by his brother into believing that he was the cause of Neil’s suffering, started to panic at her offer. He rejected it, unable to accept the idea of his brother being kicked out because of him.

So Edgar went into the dark forest.

The dark forest

Spoiler!
Edgar went to the dark forest to clear his mind. There, a voice spoke to him. It was a strange voice, an eerie mix of men, women, and children, with no clear identity or tone.

Over time, Edgar and the voice became friends. One day, Edgar asked the voice if he could see it. The voice replied that it had no physical form, but it could imitate one. Edgar explained that humans often need to see the person they are speaking to.

So, the voice formed a human shape by copying Edgar's appearance. Edgar was amazed to see someone who looked exactly like him, but he also felt awkward talking to it.

Sensing this, the voice changed its form again. This time, it became a young man who still resembled Edgar, but looked slightly different. This was the form we now know as Roger. Edgar was fascinated by the transformation. He said the figure looked like a living sculpture.

Then Edgar asked the voice what its name was. The voice said it didn’t have one. So Edgar gave it a name, "Rose," which was the nickname he had as a child.

From then on, the voice took Edgar’s appearance and went by the name Rose.

One day, Edgar stopped coming to the forest. Rose waited and waited, but he never came back. Worried, Rose decided to visit Edgar’s home. There, he found Edgar gravely ill. He was suffering from pneumonia. Rose could feel Edgar’s life slowly fading.

The truth was, Rose had the power to extend Edgar’s life. He could make him immortal and give him a healthy body. Rose had dreamed of them traveling together, going from place to place.

Rose told Edgar that he liked him. Edgar smiled and said he liked Rose too.

Hoping that Edgar would want to stay with him forever, Rose asked him to make a wish. Rose expected Edgar to choose him. But instead, Edgar asked him to help his brother.

He said Neil had suffered so much because of him, and what he wanted most was for his brother to be happy.

Rose was heartbroken. He felt a mixture of love and hate. He wanted to embrace Edgar, but at the same time, he wanted to strangle him.

Edgar had not chosen him.

Still, Rose decided to grant his wish.

Curse pt1
Spoiler!
Rose went to visit Neil Ostil. Neil was at a pub, drinking cheap alcohol. He was startled when he saw Rose. At first, he thought his brother was haunting him. But Rose simply smiled and asked, "If I could grant you a wish, what would you ask for?"

Without hesitation, Neil replied, "Wealth, fame, and power!"

Rose looked at him and asked, "Even if the price is your brother's life?"

Neil quickly said yes. "He's dying anyway, so he might as well be useful for once."
Rose whispered in his thoughts, taunting Edgar. "Look at him. The brother you loved so dearly doesn't even care about you."

Eventually, Edgar died. But even at his funeral, Neil still blamed him and insulted his name. The matriarch of the Sylvestien family, furious at Neil's behavior, kicked him out of the mansion.

Everyone thought that was the end for Neil.

But suddenly, luck seemed to turn in his favor. A distant relative passed away without an heir and left all of his wealth to Neil. With the inheritance, Neil began investing in businesses. Every venture he entered became a massive success. Before long, he was the richest man in the kingdom.

There was a time in history when a great fire burned down a part of the city. Neil donated a huge sum of money to rebuild it. In recognition, the king awarded him an honorary title. The people hailed him as a hero. His wish for fame had come true.

But he wasn’t finished.

He still wanted revenge against the Sylvestien matriarch. Unfortunately for him, she had passed away before he could do anything. So instead, he decided to buy the mansion she once ruled over. He had it fully renovated, turning it into the most beautiful mansion in the country.

Now, all that was left was stability. So he sought to marry a beautiful woman from the most powerful family. When he succeeded, his wish for power was fulfilled.

Despite all his lavish spending, Neil's wealth never seemed to diminish.

Then, one day, Rose appeared before him again.

"I’m here to collect my payment," he said.

Curse pt2
Spoiler!
Rose decided to take the payment. He sealed the mansion and broke Neil's hands and feet. Rose spread throughout the mansion and killed everyone, leaving only the Otis family alive. The screams of the servants echoed through the halls and haunted the estate.

Neil's wife took her own life.

Rose began training Neil's son to become the next heir. The Otis bloodline needed to continue. But training alone was not enough. When the son was about to come of age, Rose took on his appearance and attended as many social gatherings as he could, looking for a bride.

Eventually, he found a woman from a lower-ranking noble family whose household was deep in debt. She married into the Otis family and was brought to the mansion. Rose led her to the son's room.

Neil witnessed this and begged Rose to stop. He pleaded with him to end the Otis line instead. But Rose did not listen.

In time, the woman gave birth to a child. Rose raised the child himself. The cycle continued until a girl was finally born.

She had brown hair and green eyes, just like Edgar. Because of that, Rose showed her a small amount of kindness. When her mother died, the girl began trying to please Rose, hoping to stay in his favor. Rose raised her carefully.

When she came of age, Rose asked her if she wanted a wish.

How it ends

Spoiler!
Neil Otis, Edgar’s brother, was still alive and hidden on the 5th garden. His arm was rotting and falling apart, but it kept regenerating. For hundreds of years, Roger did not allow him to die, nor did he let him lose his mind.

FL convinced Neil to help them. She tried to buy time by prolonging her conversation with Roger.

Suddenly, Roger clutched his chest. "What have you done?!" he screamed. He dragged her into his room, where Neil Otis was laughing.

Neil held up a small rose. Roger ran toward him, shouting, "No!" But it was too late. Neil set the rose on fire. Roger took the burning rose and hugged it, as if it were the most precious thing in the world.

"I concede defeat. You won, Richelle."

The entire room was engulfed in white flames. Soon after, Alan came running and pulled her away. Before everything vanished, she looked at Roger one last time. He was staring at her, or rather, at her eyes. Just before the flames completely overtook the room, she heard his final words.

"What truly beautiful green eyes."

"Ah, so that was it," she whispered. She looked at the man in the painting. He also had green eyes, just like hers.

They managed to escape the mansion and looked back at it one last time. The entire structure had been consumed by fire.
The rest of the story continues in the side story, which tells of their life after the mansion.

It shows how they lived under different circumstances.

There is also the story of Rose. He returned to being void, but he could no longer go back to how he was before meeting Edgar. He traveled across many worlds and different timelines. In every one of them, he saw Richelle. He saw how she lived.

Eventually, he chose to set Edgar’s soul free. He hid Edgar’s soul inside a rose.

Rose continued to exist for eternity until, one day, he saw Edgar again. That was when he learned the truth. Edgar’s grandmother was Richelle, and his grandfather was Alan. They had lived a happy life. That was all Rose ever wanted to hear.

Edgar recognized him. At the time, Rose had taken on Richelle’s appearance. Edgar told him it felt awkward, since it was the face of his grandmother. So Rose changed back to his previous appearance, the form of Roger.

Edgar said his grandmother once told him that if he ever met someone who looked like that man, he should tell him about her life, and how happy she had been.

Spoiler!
"I will grant it as a reward for easing my boredom. I can give you your freedom, if that is what you want," he said.

The girl's name was Charlotte.

Charlotte was tempted to wish for freedom. But then Rose told her that her grandfather was still capable of producing children. That single remark was enough to change her mind. She could not bear the thought of new children being born into the curse.

Instead of wishing for freedom, she offered a deal.

She asked Rose to create a rule for the mansion. One that would allow humans a chance to survive. One that would create a way to break the curse.

She said that if someone from the outside discovered Rose’s real name, then the curse must come to an end.

Rose agreed to her request.

From that point forward, he began using the name Rogelios. Later, he started going by Roger.

As usual, Charlotte married and gave birth to a child. Her husband cared only about business and wealth. She felt nothing but resentment toward him.

The curse remained in effect. Once a new heir was born, the previous one would slowly rot away and die. Charlotte suffered the same fate.

Before she died, she wrote a letter and left it in her room, hoping that someone from the outside would find it.

The letter told the story of the Otis family. It also revealed Roger’s real name:

Rose.

Spoiler!
The curse continued, and so did Rose's plan of raising an heir, taking a new wife, and keeping the bloodline alive. This cycle went on, all the way to the present timeline.

THE MOTHER

The mother’s name was Jacqueline. Known as Jaq in her village, she was the most beautiful girl around and had a talent for singing. She had big dreams of making it to the top. Eventually, she left her village in pursuit of a better future.

Jaq joined a small theatre troupe and began performing. It was there that she met an old nobleman who became her sponsor. With his support, she began performing in larger theatres. She dreamed of one day performing in front of the king.

Soon, she was known across the kingdom as the most beautiful woman. Many rich and handsome nobles pursued her.

One day, while performing, she noticed a man with dark eyes in the crowd. The way he looked at her made it clear that he adored her. She felt it in her heart that this man would change her life.

She was not wrong.
Not long after, her sponsor brought exciting news. The Otis family had invited her to perform at their mansion. She believed it was only a matter of time before the king noticed her.

At the mansion, she met the man from the audience. His name was Rick Otis. For the first time in many years, the Otis mansion opened its doors to visitors. Everyone was stunned by how glamorous it was. The Otis family held a grand banquet in her honor. She and Rick began to talk and spend time together. What was meant to be a five-day celebration turned into ten.

On the tenth day, Rick proposed to her. At first, she rejected him because of the gap in their social status. But eventually, she accepted. She had fallen in love.

News of the engagement spread quickly. Her sponsor was furious. He warned her that she would regret it.

"You were meant for more. You could have achieved something greater than becoming a housewife."
She ran through the halls of the mansion, screaming, until the roses began to wrap around her. She collapsed and cried out.

"Take me. Take my body. Take my mind too."

But no matter what she did, she could not die. Her mind refused to break.

She bought dresses and jewelry. She changed outfits six times a day. That was all she had left. Love had betrayed her. Her dreams were gone. Her life was gone. Her children were gone.

All that remained was gold.

"You can change your appearance, and your voice is amazing. Are you a forest spirit?"
<I...>
He, who had been licking his lips, bent his knees and met Edgar’s eyes. It seemed that he had finally understood what he should do—what he wanted to do.

He just wanted to see Edgar Otis happy.
I wanted to walk with you, see your smile, and hear you say that it was a really good life.

That was all. I was simply so attached to it that I couldn’t leave this place until now.

<I’ve just been waiting for you. That’s all I am.>

"Do you know me?"
<I don’t know you.>

This body was made for—
Edgar’s eyes widened with interest and excitement. The boy simply shrugged his shoulders.

"Are you saying that you’re like my guardian angel?"
<Okay, if you want.>

"Then, may I ask your name? Since this is Rose Forest, is it Rose?"

A longed-for name came with a longed-for voice. A sobbing laugh escaped.

<Whatever your name is, do as you wish. I will be who you want me to be.>

Rose reached out and intertwined her hand with Edgar’s. Warmth passed through her fingertips.

I wanted to feel this warmth again.
Even just once.

<Edgar.>

The path that had been cut off for a long time was finally reconnected. This time, I will listen to you, know you, and walk slowly for you.

<Welcome back to the Rose Mansion.> So that we can have a beautiful farewell.

<End>
