For my understanding, Ignis loved Elissa, not because she was his contractor but he loved her as a person so he wanted to be a human and love Elissa. He tried to eat Leon's soul that full of despair to turn back in time. 

(This is a speculation). I guess he reincarnated as a human specifically, the Marquis. That's why, the Marquis suddenly develops feelings with Elissa that makes him confused but in the end, he let go the confusion and accept the fact that he has feelings with Elissa. 

@Noir Black    well I get that, but what about the part that ignise tried to devote Leon's soul, but Leon was strong, and inise got devoted instead but no completely, so it now formed a human with spirit king power, that is full of anger and gathered and he has already been contracted, so there's someone controlling him and that's who the empress has to find and defeat
