@Neko_Usagi i could be wrong but i think brothels and prostitutes back in the day were closer related to "celebrities" or rather if they were high ranking prostitutes they had a lot of societal power, so it makes sense to not want to step down especially if youre in the top spot. Though i dont know that this information is entirely correct espeically for whatever time period this takes place in (not sure that its been mentioned).
